Micro- Nano electronics technologies suitable for international cooperation

“Today, semiconductors and their value chains underpin innovation and competitiveness in all major sectors of the economy. In Europe, the semiconductor ecosystem itself employs approximately 250,000 people directly. More than 800,000 people work on the integration of components into systems, applications and services across Europe, and more than 2,500,000 are employed in the complete components value chain. Overall, micro- and nano-electronic components and systems enable the generation of at least 10% of GDP in Europe and the world.”

More than 450 million has been invested in micro- nanoelectronics and smart embedded components and systems by the European Commission in the past ten years. More efficient electrical cars, smart textiles, revolutionary health devices are some of the examples of about  110 research and innovation funded projects contributing to the progress of miniaturisation (More Moore) and improved functionality (More than Moore) at an affordable cost.

Being at the forefront in the manufacturing and design of these technologies, doubling the economic value of the semiconductor component production in Europe by 2020-2025, is one of the main goal of the European Commission. This ambitious goal is part of the European Industrial Strategic Roadmap and the related Implementation Plan, agreed on June 2014 between the European Commission and the Electronic Leaders Group (ELG).

Beside the Joint Technology Initiative on Electronics Components and Systems (JTI ECSEL), the Horizon 2020 calls has fostered the generic technology development focused on exploratory research for the continued shrinking of horizontal and vertical physical feature sizes.

The global cooperation with the goal to facilitate the international consensus on future Micro- Nano- electronics is expected to be encouraged in the Call for Proposal, opened last December 2016:

Specific H2020 Call: ICT-31-2017 Micro- Nanoelectronics technologies

Targeted Countries: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and USA

Budget: 19M€ . The Commission considers that proposals requesting a contribution from the EU between EUR 2 and 4 million would allow this specific challenge to be addressed appropriately.

Deadline: 25th April 2017

Type of action: Research and Innovation Action

Technological targets: Proposals should foster i.) the development of new approaches to scale functional  performance of information processing and storage and ii.) the 3D sequential integration (at transistor scale) possibly mixed with 3D parallel integration (at circuit level) for system solutions to increase functionalities and capabilities

In particular in the call text, specifically in the case of Research and Innovation Actions, it is stated: “International cooperation with clear EU industrial benefits may be considered, preferably with nations that have substantial research in the area (e.g. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and USA).”

In the frame of Idealist NCP NetworkMicro- Nanoelectronics technologies innovation ecosystems and available funding mechanisms has been introduced, in order to make easier the connection between European and relevant Third Countries organizations.
