DPEND - Digital Preservation from Every Networked Device

PROJECT OVERVIEW
PS ID:

PS-UK-82422

Status:

Closed

The aim of DPEND is to make digital preservation as easy as possible for a wide range of organisations.  This will be achieved by the development of web based digital preservation software which will be linked to a cloud storage system.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Proposal Outline:

In Wales a constortium headed by the Archives and Records Council Wales (ARCW) has been established to develop Digital Preservation through a wide range of organisations ranging from small local authority archive services with less than 5 staff to larger organisations such as the National Library of Wales.

The project has now reached the stage where it wishes to address:

- the skills barriers which stand in the way of many smaller organisations carrying out Digital Preservation,

- the technological problems of stand alone systems

- the use of cloud storage

Further to this ARCW is looking at a practical solution which will enable all organisations to carry out digital preservation despite limited resources and skills.

The project will look at building on  the work of various open source tools and microservices to develop a prototype of a web based workbench which can act as the front end to a cloud based digital repository.   This prototype will enable digital preservation by providing for the ingest, managemnent, administration, access and preservation planning required in line with the Open Archive Information System (OAIS) model.
