The application of solid state light sources (Light Emitting Diodes) is spreading in many fields of life. Luminous efficacy of phosphor white LEDs is increasing, white light with very good quality can be produced for general lighting purposes. In special cases (road lighting, indoor lighting, workplace lighting, etc.), ideal light source spectrum can be achieved with additional colour LEDs.
A light source could become better and more prefereable for the end-user, if it's spectral power distribution is fitted to the capabilities of the human visual system.
The presently used UGR glare formula does not work properly with LED luminaires if the observer can distinguish the single luminous LED sources. The proper description of non-even light source discomfort glare has to be developed to be albe to develop better luminaires that will not disturb the user.
With the intelligent control possibility of LED light sources, tuneable (or self-tunable) light source can be produced, which is able the produce the optimal spectral power distribution for the actual application.
