PROJECT OVERVIEW

Objective b) Learning analytics, educational data mining

Our project aims to support organizations and individuals in the process of vocational training by generating and analyzing meaningful data from the learning process. The main objective is to stimulate the take-up of learning technologies in different learning contexts. Thus, we aim to use data that have been generated in the context of learning, to deliver evidence of the effectiveness of learning technologies. The results of our data analysis will be presented by intuitive interfaces for visualizing and interacting the data in order to enable individuals and organizations to get a dedicated overview about the effects of learning technologies, encouraging their innovative use.

The initial trigger of this project idea is the headquarter of the European Research Center for Infor-mation Systems (ERCIS) at the University of Münster, Germany (see description below). As major industry partner ERCIS has made an agreements with german industry partners to build up a comprehensive consortium for technology-enhanced learning. In addition, due to its sophisticated network structure, ERCIS has numerous potential research and industry partners at hand that will be considered to join the con-sortium. In addition, ERCIS is looking for enthusiastic partners to engage in the presented project idea. The ERCIS will not necessarily act as project coordinator.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Proposal Outline:

We argue that in future IT-supported business processes will play a significant role in terms of learning processes in organizations. This is due to the steady increasing importance of information technology and it’s still fast-changing environment. Up-to-date learning concepts in combination with modern technology solutions (e.g. Web 2.0 technology) can contribute to possible solution approaches for the aforementioned scenarios. They create new opportunities of networking, group formation, cooperative learning and can serve as source for meaningful learning data that can later be analyzed to enhance the learning process.

Following the design science approach our project aims to develop an innovative learning toolkit that supports the presented ideas. In particular, the toolkit will be able to collect, store, explore and reason on large-scale educational data to better understand learners' knowledge, assess their progress and evaluate environments in which they learn. Our project aims to create innovative training scenarios for such developments that are supported by the toolkit to be constructed. We would like to enhance existing training offerings of IT-supported business processes. Following this approach, we are able to put the scientific ideas directly into practice.

PARTNER PROFILE SOUGHT
Required skills and Expertise:

The European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) is an international network of scientists, conducting cooperative research in the field of information systems. The ERCIS Headquarters at the University of Münster currently consists of ten full professors in the fields of information systems, computer science, quantitative methods, business administration and law. They provide experience in national and international research and practice projects. Roughly 100 research assistants are involved in research projects at the ERCIS. Moreover, there are numerous cooperative agreements with European and international universities. More information can be found on: http://www.ercis.org.

Description of work to be carried out by the partner(s) sought:

Possible partners

  • Research and industry institutions (for example but not exclusively from the field of psychology or human-computer interaction) with a proven track record in the area of cognitive research in terms of vocational learning. Possible partners shall be able to provide cognitive models for different learning styles that can be tested against large data sets.
  • Research or industry institutions (for example but not exclusively from the field of information systems or pedagogics) with a proven track record in the area of (E-)Learning research or learning theories that facilitate comparison of the collected data. The partners shall be expert of modern learning approaches like blended learning or comparable concepts.
  • Industry organizations that have the willingness to apply and demonstrate innovative learning concepts for IT-supported business processes within their organization. Possible partners shall apply the toolkit in their technological learning contexts and provide learning data set for further analysis.
