Horizon 2020 launched with €15 billion over first two years

The European Commission has for the first time presented calls for projects under Horizon 2020, the European Union's €80 billion research and innovation programme.

Calls in the 2014 budget alone are worth around €7.8 billion, with funding focused on the three key pillars of Horizon 2020:

Excellent Science: Around €3 billion, including €1.7 billion for grants from the European Research Councilfor top scientists and €800 million for Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowships for younger researchers (seeMEMO/13/1123).

Industrial Leadership: €1.8 billion to support Europe's industrial leadership in areas like ICT, nanotechnologies, advanced manufacturing, robotics, biotechnologies and space.

Societal challenges: €2.8 billion for innovative projects addressing Horizon 2020's seven societal challenges, broadly: health; agriculture, maritime and bioeconomy; energy; transport; climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials; reflective societies; and security.

ICT in Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with some €79 billion of funding available over 7 years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. In Horizon 2020, the EU is investing at least 25% more in ICT research than in previous research programmes.

This will support the full range of actions, from high-risk, ground-breaking research to innovation that can deliver revolutionary business breakthroughs, often on the basis of emerging technologies.Information and Communication Technologies underpin innovation and competitiveness across private and public sectors and enable scientific progress in all disciplines. Thus in H2020, ICT-related topics can be found in all priorities, from 'Excellence Science' to 'Industrial Leadership', to 'Societal Challenges'.Around €1.2 billion of funding for ICT is available through the first Horizon 2020 calls.
